The First Night Akron 2011 button will be on display, along with the 14 previous First Night buttons, during the November Artwalk in downtown Akron from 7 to 8 p.m. Nov. 6 at Summit Artspace.
Guests will be able to meet the local artists who designed the buttons at the First Night Button Artist Reception. The event is open to 15 Year Celebration button holders. The admission buttons can be purchased for $15 at Summit Artspace the evening of the event, or online at http://www.firstnightakron.org or at a variety of locations throughout the community.
The buttons provide access to 15 arts and cultural events in the community through April 2011, including the annual family-friendly, alcohol-free First Night New Year's Eve event.
This year's winning artist is Maria Alejandra Zanetta, a professor at the University of Akron. A committee of previous button-art winners made the selection.
Zanetta, originally from Buenos Aires, said the button art reflects the feelings people often have on the last day of the year, when they ponder the past year and promise themselves the new year will be better.
